In Devil Hunter, you reset your stats at the Soul Altar in the Hunter’s Rest hub, or free of charge once per save file from the Status menu before you finish Chapter 3. A full respec refunds every attribute point you have spent and costs either one Oblivion Shard plus 25,000 souls, or 300 premium gems for an instant, cooldown-free version. Everything else — your level, equipment, unlocked skills, story progress, and map completion — is retained.
The numbers below match the current 2026 build. Devil Hunter has been hotfixed repeatedly since launch, so check the confirmation screen before you commit: the game always displays the full price and the refund total before anything is deducted from your account.

Every Reset Method, Side by Side
Devil Hunter separates a full respec (every attribute point returned to the unspent pool) from a partial respec (one attribute emptied). It also has a free early-game window, a premium instant option, and a separate path for skill points, which do not reset alongside attributes. The five routes are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one is the single most common way players waste shards.
| Method | Where to find it | Cost | Cooldown | What it refunds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free respec window | Status > Attributes > Reset Allocation | 0 souls, 0 items | None, but limited to once per save file | All attribute points |
| Partial respec | Soul Altar, Hunter’s Rest hub | 1 Oblivion Shard | 10 minutes | One attribute only |
| Full respec | Soul Altar, Hunter’s Rest hub | 1 Oblivion Shard + 25,000 souls | 10 minutes | All attribute points |
| Premium respec | Store tab > Services > Oblivion Rite | 300 premium gems | None | All attribute points and skill points |
| Skill reset (separate system) | Consume a Skill Reset Tome from inventory | 1 Tome (one guaranteed per playthrough, rare drop from the Warden of Ash) | None | Skill points only |
Menu Locations in Plain Terms
The free window is buried, which is why so many players never use it. It lives inside the character sheet rather than in the hub:
- Free respec: open the pause menu, go to Status, tab across to Attributes, and look for the Reset Allocation button at the bottom of the panel. It only appears while your save is still pre-Chapter 3.
- Altar respecs: fast-travel to Hunter’s Rest, walk northwest past the blacksmith to the stone altar with the blue flame, and interact. The altar menu lists Reallocate One and Reallocate All.
- Premium respec: the Store tab, under Services. It is account-bound, not character-bound, so the gems are spent on whichever character you are currently controlling.
One detail worth knowing before you spend anything: the altar’s confirm dialog defaults to Reallocate All, not the partial option. If you tapped the wrong line in the list, back out and re-enter rather than confirming on autopilot.
What You Keep and What Actually Changes
The refund is narrower than most players expect. A respec moves points around; it does not rewind your character.
- Retained: character level and total XP, all gear and its upgrade tiers, unlocked skills and passives, crafting recipes, chapter progress, fast-travel points, inventory, currencies other than the cost you paid, achievements, and companion affinity.
- Refunded: the attribute points themselves, returned to the unspent pool at the top of the Attributes panel. Nothing is lost — you re-spend every point.
- Affected indirectly: equipment with attribute requirements. A weapon needing 30 Strength becomes unequippable the moment you drop below that threshold. It stays in your inventory, flagged in red, and re-equips the instant you put the points back.
- Lost: attribute-milestone passives that were active only while a stat sat above a threshold, such as the 40-Vitality regeneration node. These switch off until you re-qualify.
Step-by-Step: A Clean Full Respec
- Stand at the altar with the build you want written down first. The refund screen shows your total available points, but not what you originally spent where, so a screenshot or a note saves guesswork.
- Unequip anything with an attribute requirement above your new floor. This is the step people skip. If your weapon needs 30 Strength and you plan to drop to 12, removing it beforehand prevents the “cannot equip” state mid-respec.
- Confirm you have 1 Oblivion Shard and 25,000 souls. The altar refuses the transaction outright if either is short; it will not partially charge you.
- Select Reallocate All and confirm. Points land in the unspent pool immediately and the 10-minute altar cooldown begins.
- Re-spend every point before you leave the altar. You are not locked in, but the cooldown means a mistake made here cannot be corrected for ten minutes without burning a second shard.
- Re-equip gear and re-check your milestone passives. Confirm the thresholds you care about — usually Vitality for survivability and your damage stat — are actually crossed.
The Cost Math: Shards vs. Gems vs. Time
Whether the premium route is worth it depends entirely on your farming rate, and the gap is smaller than it looks. Using commonly reported mid-game figures:
- Souls: a Chapter 6 loop yields roughly 1,500–1,700 souls per minute with a standard build, so 25,000 souls is about 15–17 minutes of farming.
- Oblivion Shards: Depths floors 5–8 drop roughly one shard per 20 minutes; the Gravekeeper set bonus cuts that to about one per 8 minutes, so budget 8–20 minutes per shard.
- Total per full altar respec: roughly 25–35 minutes of play.
- Premium respec: 300 gems, which sits in the entry-level gem pack tier — a few US dollars at typical store pricing — and takes zero minutes.
The break-even is straightforward: if you expect to respec three or more times in a single playthrough, the premium route saves you more than an hour of farming for about the price of a coffee. If you respec once to fix a dumped stat, the free window or a single shard is almost always the better answer. Also note that the premium respec refunds skill points too, which no other method does — for a build pivot that touches both trees, it is doing two jobs at once.
Which Reset Fits Your Situation
| Your situation | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Below level 25, still pre-Chapter 3 | Free Status menu respec | Costs nothing; no reason to spend a shard |
| One stat was dumped by mistake | Partial respec (1 shard) | Cheapest fix; leaves the rest of the build intact |
| Full build pivot at level 60+ | Full altar respec | Refunds everything at once for 25,000 souls |
| Frequent PvP or boss-specific swaps | Premium respec | No 10-minute cooldown, so you can swap between attempts |
| New Game+ run | NG+ reset at the hub | Free, and it keeps your gear and upgrades |
| Wrong skill nodes, correct attributes | Skill Reset Tome | Attributes are untouched, so a full respec would be wasted |
Common Mistakes That Cost You Shards
A few failure modes show up again and again in player reports, and all of them are avoidable:
- Burning a shard during the cooldown window. The altar will accept a second shard once the timer expires, but the refund total is the same. Wait out the ten minutes instead of paying twice for one fix.
- Assuming the free respec lasts all game. It closes permanently when you complete Chapter 3, not at the end of the story. Players who save it “for later” often lose it entirely.
- Expecting milestone passives to stack. If gear already grants the regeneration node you were about to re-qualify for, the second source does not add on top.
- Respeccing mid-run instead of at the hub. The altar is the only place full respecs work. You cannot fix a build from a checkpoint bonfire, and the run continues with whatever you had when you entered.
- Spending the Tome on attributes. The Skill Reset Tome touches skill points only. Using it to solve an attribute problem does nothing at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does resetting stats in Devil Hunter cost real money?
Only if you choose the premium route. The free pre-Chapter 3 respec costs nothing, and the altar respecs are paid entirely in souls and Oblivion Shards, both of which are farmable in-game. The 300-gem Oblivion Rite is optional and exists mainly for players who want to swap builds without a cooldown.
Do I lose my level or XP when I reset stats?
No. Your character level, total accumulated XP, and everything derived from them are retained. A respec only returns spent attribute points to the unspent pool so you can allocate them differently — the total number of points available stays exactly the same.
How many times can I reset for free?
Once per save file, and only before you complete Chapter 3. The Reset Allocation button appears in the Status > Attributes panel during that window and disappears permanently afterward. There is no way to reopen it on the same save.
Can I reset just one stat instead of everything?
Yes. The Soul Altar offers Reallocate One, which empties a single attribute for one Oblivion Shard and leaves the rest of your build untouched. It is the cheapest option when a single dumped stat is the problem and everything else is working.
Is there a cooldown on resets?
Altar respecs, both partial and full, share a 10-minute cooldown that starts the moment you confirm. The premium Oblivion Rite has no cooldown at all, which is its main practical advantage over the free and shard-based methods.
What happens to gear I can no longer equip after a respec?
It stays in your inventory and is flagged in red until you meet the requirement again. Nothing is destroyed or sold. Reallocate the missing points at the same altar and the item becomes equippable immediately, with its upgrade tier intact.
